Sue Ross, founder of Choirs4Kids is our 2020 AusMumpreneur WA-SA People’s Choice Making a Difference (Education) Silver Award winner.

Choirs4kids is a place where children sing and connect with others from around the world. Where they learn how to use their voice to the best of THEIR ability. Where children are provided with every opportunity to sing and grow, create and experience, at any time of day or night through real-time and recorded sessions. Children sing together in the comfort of their own space without fear of ridicule, peer pressure or barriers that society may bring.  Choirs4kids is a place where every child is valued and they go that extra mile to understand and get to know each child. Choirs4kids do singing brilliantly!

When did you start your business?

May 2016.

What was the inspiration behind starting this business?

Having been a primary school teacher for 20 years, I was aware of music becoming marginalised by the education system and thought of as the spare time subject.  I was also aware that my 4-year-old needed a safe place to be able to sing and create, and that in school she was not going to be able to do this for at least a few years. This motivated me to start singing for children in May 2016. From there we blossomed into running in 5 venues across Perth in just 4 years.

What are you most excited about in your business?

Being able to provide a space for young people to sing without fear. For them to be able to experiment with their voice and to find amazing confidence for their every day lives through the power of singing.  I’m super excited with how Covid gave me the push to set up online and how now I teach young people online in 10 countries around the world.

What has been the most challenging thing about starting your business?

Definitely finding clients and educating our families about local business and the online aspect, both of these have been challenges but I feel I am now getting recognised in more areas and receive phone calls and emails from all over as they have heard of us. Remembering to be ‘mum’ at home was also a challenge as I get super excited about what is happening outside in the business and sometimes it feels like I live, breathe and sleep singing!

What advice would you give to other women thinking about starting a business?

Simply to GO FOR IT!  Being a woman in business shouldn’t make a difference. We are strong, versatile, multi-tasking beings who are more than capable of starting any business we desire. Self-doubt no longer exists lovely people.

Why did you enter the AusMumpreneur Awards?

It was a fantastic opportunity to remind myself of what I achieve each year. To boost that self-confidence. To share with others what I do and how much I love every day in my business.  It’s also an opportunity to grow personally and in the business and to get the business name out there more.

What did you enjoy the most about being part of the awards?

Having my family around me and them also getting glammed up for the online event! My family are my rock in the business and so often they can’t attend – especially my inspiration – my 9 year old.

What surprised you most about the awards?

Winning silver in the People’s Choice for Making  a Difference was such a surprise. It showed me how much I mean to my community.

How did the awards help you in your business?

Definitely helped boost numbers across Australia. Having branched out into other states and indeed the world in 2020 it was great to hear people ‘know’ of my business elsewhere..

What advice would you give to others mums thinking about entering the awards?

It’s a fun, supportive process. The team at AusMupreneur are helpful every step of the way  and you really have nothing to lose in entering. It gives you clarity on your business which is super important too.

What’s happening next in your business? Any big plans for the future?

Online domination for singing, of course!…..where are you!?

We have plans to use new software to actually sing together and are working with a team in Spain and Holland on their new software to be able to bring voices together in real time  but at a distance.
