When did you start your business?
I started Toon Copywriting in 2008 while I was 5 months pregnant. Initially, I started as a freelance endeavour, but over the years I’ve moved into entirely passive income and created a small empire of podcasts, courses, memberships, masterminds, and the marketing to support them.
What was the inspiration behind starting this business?
I was inspired to start my business after noticing a gap in the market for dedicated, high-quality copywriting services. I wanted to provide valuable, results-driven content for small businesses and entrepreneurs, making SEO accessible to everyone. After that, I was one of the first in Australia to launch courses and memberships to support small business owners.
What are you most excited about in your business?
These days, it’s evolved into being excited about my members’ success. I feel like the old crone of digital marketing, passing on my nuggets of information for their success. I’m also really excited about speaking more and writing more books.
What has been the most challenging thing about starting your business?
The most challenging aspect was balancing the demands of running a business with family life, especially in the early days. Learning to delegate and manage time effectively was crucial. I even wrote a book about it, “Six Figures in School Hours.”
What advice would you give to other women thinking about starting a business?
Don’t wait for the perfect moment—just start! Learn as you go, leverage your network, and never underestimate the power of community and support from fellow entrepreneurs.
Why did you enter the AusMumpreneur Awards?
I entered the AusMumpreneur Awards to celebrate and showcase my second business book. Obviously, I wanted to gain recognition and connect with other inspiring mumpreneurs.
What did you enjoy the most about being part of the awards?
I loved the sense of community and the opportunity to share my journey with like-minded women who understand the challenges of balancing motherhood and business. I was blown away by the warmth and loveliness of the people at the event and how snazzy the event production was!
What surprised you most about the awards?
I was surprised by the incredible level of talent and creativity among the participants—it was both humbling and inspiring.
How did the awards help you in your business?
The awards provided valuable visibility and credibility, boosting my profile. Being at the event helped me forge new connections.
What advice would you give to other mums thinking about entering the awards?
Go for it! It’s a fantastic platform to showcase your achievements, gain recognition, and connect with a supportive community. Plus, it’s a great confidence booster. I would also say it’s a warm, friendly event and not at all intimidating if it’s your first time. Cute trophy too!
What has been the best thing about starting your own business?
The freedom and flexibility to create a business that aligns with my values and lifestyle while helping others achieve their goals has been incredibly rewarding. I love the creative freedom I have.
What’s happening next in your business?
I’m expanding my DMC membership community and working on exciting collaborations to continue delivering top-notch content and support. I’ve also launched a successful new program based on my new book, “Six Figures While You Sleep,” and have a final book in the trilogy in draft.
What are your big plans for the future?
I don’t have big plans, really. I’ve achieved most of what I’ve wanted to achieve. I am seeking a more quiet life, with lots of books, long walks, and perhaps finally learning to roller skate.
