When did you start your business?

I co-founded Clever Octopus in 2022 with Scott Robinson, a business-savvy mentor who helped me establish the company and provided valuable guidance. After laying the foundation together, Scott stepped aside, giving me the opportunity to take full ownership of Clever Octopus and lead the business on my own.

What was the inspiration behind starting this business?

The inspiration behind starting Clever Octopus was to redefine the digital design landscape by offering a boutique alternative to traditional agency models. We wanted to deliver clever, human-centered services that carve out unique niches for brands that deserve to stand out. Our vision was to create more than just a design studio. We aimed to build a space where businesses could authentically connect with their audience, supported by creative strategies that feel both personal and powerful.

What are you most excited about in your business?

I’m most excited about continuing to build Clever Octopus by nurturing deep, lasting business relationships and partnerships. It’s incredibly fulfilling to help entrepreneurs and organizations push past the overwhelm, guiding them through the branding journey with confidence and clarity. Being able to support, nurture, and celebrate their successes at every step is what fuels my passion for what I do.

What has been the most challenging thing about starting your business?

The most challenging aspect of starting my business has been navigating the personal obstacles life has thrown my way, including chronic health conditions, disabilities, and my own mental health journey. These experiences have required me to continually pivot, adapt, and problem-solve, pushing me to develop a more resilient mindset. Despite these challenges, they’ve shaped me into a stronger, more empathetic entrepreneur, allowing me to approach both business and life with greater clarity and flexibility.

What advice would you give to other women thinking about starting a business?

If you’re anything like me, working for someone else might not be the right fit. Starting my own business has given me the freedom to create a work environment that aligns with my values and lifestyle. Having control over my hours, schedule, and the clients I choose to collaborate with has brought me not only success but also genuine happiness and passion for what I do. My advice? If you can find a way to do what you love, it will never feel like work—it will feel like a true purpose.

Why did you enter the AusMumpreneur Awards?

I’ve been part of the AusMumpreneur community for a few years, joining during the thick of COVID. After taking time off to have my fourth child, establishing Clever Octopus, dissolving my previous award-winning business, and navigating a mental health journey with ADHD and PND, as well as chronic illness, I decided it was time to back myself and apply for the awards this year. After all the hard work and resilience, I knew if I didn’t cheer myself on, who would? I applied and won silver, and I’m incredibly excited to be acknowledged for the dedication I’ve put into Clever Octopus.

What did you enjoy the most about being part of the awards?

Although I was unable to attend the awards in person due to being in the hospital at the time, I still felt an incredible sense of joy and honor. Lying in my hospital bed, I watched as amazing women were celebrated for their achievements, and it filled me with pride to be a part of such an inspiring community. It was a truly uplifting experience!

What surprised you most about the awards?

What surprised me most about the awards was the incredible level these businesswomen have reached. The charities, organizations, and businesses they’ve founded are nothing short of awe-inspiring. It was both encouraging and motivating to see the impact these amazing women are making in their communities and beyond.

How did the awards help you in your business?

Being part of the 2024 AusMumpreneur Awards has allowed me to truly acknowledge my own achievements. It gave me the opportunity to reflect and congratulate myself on the resilience, willpower, and accomplishments I’ve reached, despite facing extremely difficult challenges. The recognition has boosted my confidence and reaffirmed that I’m on the right path with Clever Octopus.

What advice would you give to other mums thinking about entering the awards?

Just do it! Back yourself, girl! Show the world how amazing you are and what you’ve accomplished. The experience of being part of the AusMumpreneur community is incredibly valuable, and the connections and support you gain are just as rewarding as winning. So take the leap and celebrate your journey!

What has been the best thing about starting your own business?

The best thing about starting my own business has been the independence and sense of purpose it brings. While being a mum is incredibly rewarding, it’s important to have an identity beyond motherhood. Building something of my own—a business I’ve worked hard for, that generates income and fulfills me professionally, has been amazing. It’s empowering to create a career that reflects who I am, beyond just being ‘mum.’

What’s happening next in your business?

What’s next for Clever Octopus is all about continuing to foster strong, meaningful connections and collaborations. I aim to inject even more value into my services, grow my team, and reach a level where I’m recognized as an expert in my industry. I’m also excited to expand my role as a mentor and speaker at events, inspiring other women/mothers  in business to pursue their passions and navigate their entrepreneurial journeys.

What are your big plans for the future?

Big plans? Well, maybe Forbes Magazine! But in all seriousness, my goal is to be an influential woman in business who cuts through the BS and shows that being genuine and real is what truly matters. I want to prove that the “nice guy” can win, and success comes from authenticity, kindness, and staying true to who you are.
