We are delighted to introduce you to one of our Women’s Business School graduates Helen Maree Smith, founder of Helen Maree Photography.

When did you start your business?

I started my business when my marriage ended in 2014 during that time it has developed and evolved as I have.

What was the inspiration behind starting this business?

The original inspiration was taking real affordable photos for people and has now evolved into Real Authentic Outdoor Photography for solo entrepreneurial women.

What are you most excited about in your business?

My business excites me when I can achieve my goal which is  Real Authentic Outdoor Photography for solo entrepreneurial women. Deeper into that though is that I am showing my daughter and her friends that women can overcome obstacles and achieve greatness.

What has been the most challenging thing about starting your business?

The most challenging thing is getting out of my own way and finding clients. Visibility and confidence has been areas I have had to look deeply into as do a lot of self growth as part of this. Also the frustration that I have a business degree but can’t seem to manage my own business.

What advice would you give to other women thinking about starting a business?

Do it and follow your dreams. Success isn’t about the destination, it is the journey.

Why did you choose to do the Women’s Business School Programs?

I chose this program because it offered all the things I studied at University but applied them to my own business.

What did you enjoy the most about being part of the program?

When I could attend the networking sessions I really enjoyed these. Chatting with other women who were also on the journey and knowing I wasn’t alone. I also really enjoyed working with a Business Mentor. I have gone on to do more work with this mentor as she was very personable and helpful.

What surprised you most about the program?

I was not alone; there were other women on the same journey.

Which module was the most helpful and why?

The marketing module and also the money module. It supported me to get out of my own way. I couldn’t avoid looking at costing etc as i had to do it in order to finish the course. That was a great carrot for me.

How did the program help you in your business?

Helped me to do things I was avoiding. Like looking at costing etc.

What has been the best thing about starting your own business?

The best thing is that I am able to work in an area I love supporting other businesswomen.

Would you recommend the Women’s Business School to other women starting a business? Why?

Yes I would. It is a great way to look at the areas of your business you would otherwise avoid or procrastinate over.

What’s happening next in your business?

I am in the process of setting up my first photography event and hope to run more of these each year as well as continuing one of one shoots.

What are your big plans for the future?

In the future I hope to have an admin team that supports me with the editing and booking of clients. This will mean that I can spend more time taking the photos and working with clients which is the part of the business I really love.
