Vanessa is a mum to two boys and a small business owner. She started her own online business (Vanessa M Taking Care of Business) offering online business management (OBM) and virtual assistant (VA) services to other like-minded mums and women in business. Vanessa is passionate about giving back to the community so that other like-minded mums and women in business feel empowered and supported to succeed in whatever career path they choose and that is why she has partnered with a small charity, Dress for Success South East Melbourne, to do just that!
When did you start your business?
I started off as a VA in 2018 operating as a sole trader and then I changed to a company structure in July 2021.
What was the inspiration behind starting this business?
Wanting to be financially independent while also being a role model for my kids. I also wanted to utilize my skills and experience towards something meaningful to me.
What are you most excited about in your business?
Our charity partner!
What has been the most challenging thing about starting your business?
Living and managing the juggle of starting and growing a business with motherhood and life.
What advice would you give to other women thinking about starting a business?
Just do it and figure it out as you go.
Why did you enter the AusMumpreneur Awards?
I was nominated for the award which was very unexpected and an honour so I wanted to fulfil that honour and also leverage from the opportunity to develop connections with like minded mums in business.
What did you enjoy the most about being part of the awards?
Being a part of an amazing group of women who are all winners.
What surprised you most about the awards?
The size of the event and the number of awards available.
How did the awards help you in your business?
I have been able to write a chapter in the upcoming book, which is great because I aim to become a thought leader in my own right and writing a book is one way to demonstrate my knowledge and expertise so writing a chapter is a step in the right direction.
What advice would you give to others mums thinking about entering the awards?
You deserve to be acknowledged for your effort and contribution so do it. You have nothing to lose.
What has been the best thing about starting your own business?
The sense of accomplishment and achievement.
