When did you start your business?
2018.
What was the inspiration behind starting this business?
After 15+ years in the Recruitment and HR industry working for the sole benefit of employers, my true nature as a nurturing and empowering leader emerged, forging what has become an incredibly successful career consulting business. The leap into Kate Langford Career Consulting has completely flipped the traditional focus in recruitment, from employers to employees. Now, my work consists of helping individuals draw out their skills to match their perfect job, rather than searching for a candidate whose skillset might fit a vacant role. I did this because I wanted to help the masses do what they are passionate about or untap their passion to enjoy the life wholeheartedly. I started with 2 babies under 3, left a high paying part time role that suited the lifestyle as it was not for filling me and enough to wake up every day loving what I do. I left that role with no savings and my Dad paying me 500 a week until I was on my feet and here I am today, a million dollar business that is helping so many across the country.
What are you most excited about in your business?
My mission is to enable women to understand they can have the career and a beautiful, well-adjusted home life. ‘I’ve done it, and I can teach other women how to do it.’ Herein lies my most endearing and fundamental trait: my all-embracing desire to help and serve others, to scale and be able to write a book and inspire others.
What has been the most challenging thing about starting your business?
The time you need to put in when things are not going right, and that does happen! Building resilience and problem solving abilities to the service and knowing that some things need to be sacrificed to get here. It was also challenging financially at the start, but you need to be able to see the big vision and understand risk vs reward.
What advice would you give to other women thinking about starting a business?
You need to be prepared for the hard work, late nights and determination to MAKE IT HAPPEN.
You need to be able to see the vision and not let anything stop you.
I also wish I knew before I started business that you would be doing some very late nights, or when someone was sick you had to step in or when you had a bad day, remember, there is always tomorrow. Just because you have a bad week or month in sales doesn’t mean you stop, there are ebbs and flows. If anything, it would be BACKING MYSELF in the early days, I got there, and fast, but really backing yourself from DAY 1 would have been the only thing done differently.
Why did you enter the AusMumpreneur Awards?
It was my first time entering awards fullstop. I resonated with the term Mumpreneur and thought I would throw my hat in the ring!
What did you enjoy the most about being part of the awards?
The confidence it gave me to finally see myself, to put onto paper what I have done and be proud of that. Also to be surrounded by like-minded women doing the same!
What surprised you most about the awards?
That I was a finalist let alone a winner!
How did the awards help you in your business?
It gave me the leverage and also that people saw me as doing something that was meaningful and important.
What advice would you give to others mums thinking about entering the awards?
To go for it, don’t second guess yourself. It is important to value what you do as it actually in turn helps others! If you are nervous just do it anyway!
What’s happening next in your business? Any big plans for the future?
Yes, we have grown again and had to move offices, we are currently scaling and I will be writing a book shortly. I have also now started to work with people that want to scale their business or create a concept and teaching them exactly what I have done. Kate Langford Business Consulting has been born!
