In a few weeks, it will be 6 years since my mum passed away.

Any of you who have lost your mum or a loved one will know, that you miss them everyday. I certainly miss my mum everyday. She is still with me and the funny thing is, over the last few years I have started to listen to her advice. Crazy I know but isn’t that life really? We don’t listen to our parents when we are young and it’s only as we get older that we start to realise that they weren’t talking as much crap as we initially thought!!

Simone Outerridge-Mum Jake & I

Mum has been repeating her sage advice in my head over the years and I think I’m finally starting to pay attention. One piece of that advice was living life by what she called the 5 D’s.

She told me that these 5 D’s were the key to a successful and happy life. If you can exercise them every day, there is nothing you can’t achieve.

And you know what, she was right. They are certainly a structure you can follow to help you make difficult decisions, achieve goals in life, get back on track when you stray and generally have a happy and fulfilled life.

Here are the magical 5 D’s for a successful, fulfilling and exciting life.

Dream

The things you see around you all started as a dream. The iPhone, the car, washing machine, clothes, shoes, computers the list goes on.

You first need to have a dream. You need to know what you want and what you are working towards.

Many people I know have no idea what they want in their life and have no dreams. I actually don’t believe that people don’t have dreams or don’t know what they want, I think they are scared to allow their desires to come to the surface

I encourage you to dream of what you want your life to look like. Because if you don’t you will float through life like a feather, letting life HAPPEN to you and then when you get to the end you will have regrets.

Determination

Once you have your dreams and goals, work consistently to get them. We need determination to get the things we want and achieve our dreams.

My 6-year-old son was in the back seat of the car while I was driving and he was telling me how he just thinks of things and they come true. I asked for an example and he gave the ice-cream he just ate. It may seem to him that he just “got “ the ice-cream but in fact he needed to take action towards getting the tthat ice-cream. It takes action. He needed to know what he wanted and then take determined action to get it. I think young kids are a great example of how to be determined, especially when they are having a meltdown!(if only it would be as easy as just thinking something into existence!)

It takes courage to get up and keep going when you have been knocked down.

If you run at the first sight of something being hard, then you won’t get what you want in life.

Determination will see you through.

Discipline

When I was young I wanted to be a singer and have a lead role in a high profile musical. One of the things that turned me off pursuing that dream was the knowledge that I would have to perform the same thing night after night and I would get bored!

Boredom happens to all of us. The key for those people who are successful is the internal discipline that pushes them to keep going, to not give up, to always keep their eyes on the prize!

Having discipline will mean that you keep going to achieve your goal even when you don’t feel like it.

Discernment

The dictionary defines discernment as “the ability to judge well”.

In this case, the way my mum taught me discernment was to rely on my internal guidance or my intuition as my yard stick.

Detachment

Out of the 5 D’s my mum taught me, this was her favourite. She told me that the other 4 are definitely needed to have a successful and fulfilling life, but it is detachment which will ensure your happiness.

Detachment is about letting it go. Not hanging your happiness and fulfilment hats on the outcome of your goal. Setting your goal and then letting it go.

Choosing to be happy not matter what.

Anyone can be a great writer, singer, sportsperson, actor, teacher ANYTHING that a person wants to be if they dream about it, work towards it with determination and discipline, be discerning and most importantly be detached from the outcome.

Where in your life or business can you dial up one or all of the 5 D’s to ensure your successful and fulfilling life?
