CrackaDaks was born in the early months of 2019, when Sophie Blackett and Katie Price joined forces and their knowledge as new mothers to take on the world of Modern Cloth Nappies. They both want to give mothers a small opportunity to do something helpful to impact the environment. They also want to make the coolest designed, and best fitting nappies you can buy anywhere. Katie is the in-house design guru. Therefore these nappies are designed in Perth Western Australia and, because Sophie is lucky if she could sew in a straight line, these are ethically manufactured overseas. With their idea in hand all they needed was a name. Wez (Sophie’s husband) suggested CrackaDaks. The rest is history…

Sophie & Katie won Silver for Sustainability and Bronze for Emerging AusMumpreneur in our 2020 AusMumpreneur WA-SA Awards.

When did you start your business?

Launched August 2019.

What was the inspiration behind starting this business?

We both used MCN as new mums, but hadn’t found a brand that fit our chunky monkeys just right.  We also liked the idea of creating our own prints that we liked, and Katie had artistic talent which was yet to be utilised so we thought, why not.

What are you most excited about in your business?

The community we have created of like-minded mums and dads. It has been a really great support network throughout the multiple lows of covid.

What has been the most challenging thing about starting your business?

As many working mothers can confirm, it can be a real challenge to juggle work and a business, with life as a parent with small children. We often have to wait for naptimes, day care days, or bedtime to get any work done.

One of our other biggest challenges has been trying to figure out supply versus demand.  Neither of us had any experience with business before starting CrackaDaks, so it has taken a lot of trial and error to work out supply/demand.

What advice would you give to other women thinking about starting a business?

  • Back yourself
  • Surround yourself with other women who have strengths where your weaknesses lie

Why did you enter the AusMumpreneur Awards?

We were nominated by another CrackaMum and were so humbled yet proud.

What did you enjoy the most about being part of the awards?

Meeting other amazing mums in business as well as the acknowledgment of our hard work.

What surprised you most about the awards?

Being nominated in the first place.  We had only been open for just over a year, so we were not expecting to be nominated for anything.

How did the awards help you in your business?

It helped to get our name out. We were such a new business, and still are, but the awards gave awareness of our brand to others.  It also allowed us to meet so many other wonderful ladies who are doing amazing things.

What advice would you give to others mums thinking about entering the awards?

You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

What’s happening next in your business? Any big plans for the future?

We will continue to produce our amazing, high quality products as well as a few new products on the horizon and maybe a little something for our CrackaDads.
